Cervical Cancer

Prevent, monitor, and stay away from disease.
Cervical cancer is a common cancer in women. It is caused by abnormal cell growth in the cervix, which connects the uterus to the vagina. The most common cause is infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is transmitted through sexual contact. Some strains of HPV, particularly strains 16 and 18, have a high risk of causing cervical cancer.
In the early stages of cervical cancer, there may not be any obvious symptoms, which is why many people only detect the disease when it is in an advanced stage. Symptoms to watch out for include:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding (especially after intercourse)
- Abnormal vaginal discharge, odorous or bloody
- Chronic lower abdominal pain or back pain
- Unexplained weight loss
Prevention and screening
Cervical cancer prevention can be done by:
- Get vaccinated against HPV , which protects against high-risk strains.
- Regular screening, such as cervical cancer screening (Thin prep ®) and/or HPV DNA testing, can detect precancerous abnormalities.
- Colposcopy: In cases where abnormal results are found, to examine the cells and tissues in detail.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that women aged 30 and above get regular cervical cancer screenings, as early detection can lead to a cure and increase survival rates by over 90%.
