Herpes Zoster

Herpes Zoster

Be aware and prevent it.

Herpes zoster is caused by infection with the Varicella Zoster Virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Once chickenpox is cured, the virus does not disappear from the body. Instead, it lies dormant in nerve nodes and can recur when the body’s immune system is weakened. It causes a long red rash along the nerves, with blisters and often accompanied by a burning pain.

Symptoms of Herpes Zoster

In the early stages, patients often feel pain or tingling in specific areas of the skin before a red rash and blisters appear. These symptoms usually occur on one side of the body and affect the area along the nerves. The pain can be severe, and in some cases, the pain continues even after the rash has disappeared (postherpetic neuralgia), which is common in older people.

Herpes Zoster prevention

Although Herpes Zoster often resolves on its own, it can lead to life-threatening complications, such as chronic nerve pain or secondary bacterial infections. The most effective prevention is the Herpes Zoster vaccination, which can reduce the risk of developing the disease and the severity of symptoms, especially in people aged 50 and over or those with weakened immune systems.
