It is caused by abnormal cell growth in the cervix, which connects the uterus to the vagina. The most common cause is infection with the <strong>human papillomavirus (HPV),<\/strong> which is transmitted through sexual contact. Some strains of HPV, particularly strains 16 and 18, have a high risk of causing cervical cancer.<\/p>\n<p>In the early stages of cervical cancer, there may not be any obvious symptoms, which is why many people only detect the disease when it is in an advanced stage.
